Package: nvidia-kernel-source
Version: 1.0.7174-1
Followup-For: Bug #299569

I've had this problem occur on occasion with 1.0.6629 as well, but far
less often -- maybe once a week rather than many times per day. That
only started happening after I downgraded back to 1.0.6629 after
experiencing the problems with the newer version; prior to that, it
never happened at all.

Bug #301309 looks like it might be a duplicate of this one, although the
reporter of that bug says he has to reboot after killing the X server,
which is not the case here. (Once the hung X server is killed, it can
be started up again just fine.)

The problem only seems to occur after taking an action which involves
updating things on the screen. Leave X sitting unattended for a while
and it won't happen, but load a web page (for example) and it might
hang.
