I'm seeing this too here on amd64 with any client (mpc, gmpc, ncmpc). mpd is version 0.12.2-2.
When I pause in say ncmpc or mpc it seems to kill mpd somehow. If I restart mpd with the init script that some times works or some times that hangs too. If I then killall mpd and then restart it with the initscript that works. This is after an upgrade from 0.12.1-1 which worked fine for me.
