Package: squirrelmail
Version: 2:1.4.9a-1
Severity: normal

After the etch upgrade, many of my users were unable to use SquirrelMail
because they had odd addressbook entries. The two quirks I noticed were
(1) blank lines in user.abook (i.e., just with the | characters but not
entries) and (2) lines missing trailing |'s in user.abook. In both
cases, the user was unable to open any messages or otherwise use
SquirrelMail because of the address book issue ("Error: Address book is
corrupted. Required fields are missing.") I went in manually on
the backend and fixed the address books.

These users' accounts all worked fine with the SquirrelMail in Sarge.

Also, there was no way for these users to fix the problem themselves --
even if they had shell access, the user.abook file in
/var/lib/squirrelmail/data is not writable by user accounts.

I'm not sure exactly how/why SquirrelMail became more strict with
address books, but it is definitely a problem for users. I don't know
how the pseudo-corruption got in there in the first place, since only
SquirrelMail ever had write privileges to the address books in question.
But it would be nice if there were some way for SquirrelMail to fix or
ignore the problem so it would still be usable after upgrade without
manual intervention on the backend.
