You're absolutely right, the actual bug is in nautilus-cd-burner (#421463):
it reads the audio CD as audio (with cdrdao), but then tries to
burn it as an iso track. If the image in case wouldn't have triggered
the size check, an audio CD full of whte noise would have been burned.
