I encountered this issue as recently as a few
months ago, and version 1.0.19~cvs20070505-2 of
libsane is currently installed.

However, I ended up fixing the problem by
switching from a Buslogic scsi host adapter to one
from Adaptec. (Coincidentally, soon after I
switched scsi host adapters, the AC97 audio that's
on my computer's mother board started
spontaneously going silent.)

I seem to vaguely recall trying the man page's
instructions for configuring a Buslogic BT958 a
long time ago, without result.
