So other than documenting things better in cron-apt the functionality
part of the problem is Bug#448958, okay.

Is there a particular reason that you are trying to use aptitude for
this? I suggest using apt-get with cron-apt.

Aptitude has so far not worked very well with wrapper programs such as
cron-apt. This has not really been a problem because there is no
compelling reason to try to force aptitude use for cron-apt. Apt-get
does work well with cron-apt and apt-get is still fully supported in
Debian. Using apt-get in cron-apt is perfectly reasonable. See also
Bug#438537 for more discussion of this. Working to improve aptitude
such that it will work better with wrapper programs in the future
seems worthwhile however.
