I will do as you suggested. My packaging efforts wrt VXL are stalled at the moment. It turned out the the fairly new 'insighttoolkit' package contains a significant amount of VXL (as it contains other library code available from different Debian packages: e.g. expat, gdc, niftiio, jpeg). It might be enough for my purpose, because I only need VXL as a dependency for another package. Although I think the proper way would be to package VXL upstream and make 'insighttoolkit' use it -- instead of the other way round.
