Oh dear. Another corner case. Up to now, all the options for every mode were listed in the scanimage --help output. If a particular option was not available for a particular mode, the default was given as "inactive". Therefore, for a mode change, I could simply walk through the existing options and ghost/unghost or change the values as necessary. A head scratch is necessary.
