Support for this file format is a recent addition to Gnumeric and does not
have the same degree of reliability that the support for the binary xls
format has. In particular, not all information may "round trip" when stored
in this format and reloaded. That being said, even at this early stage of
support, crashes are considered problematic.

This has been reproduced upstream and is fixed in upstream's version control
system through
        http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gnumeric?view=revision&revision=16455
which will be included in the next upstream release and in the next Debian
upload of gnumeric.

Kind regards,
Ray
