Boost famously encodes the toolset name (including GCC version number) into the library names. We currently build-depend on a specific GCC because we need to know these library names, e.g. for creating backwards compatilibity symlinks. This can be fixed once we get rid of the toolset name encoding in the library names, which is on my TODO list. Boost 1.35 is at release candidate stage, however, and it is convenient to wait for it since at that point we have a new SONAME anyway and can do away with all the symlinks with gcc version numbers. -S
