As the output you pasted shows, the scanner is recognized by the epkowa backend, which is in libsane-extras. It's possible that the epson2 backend from libsane is getting in the way and not playing nice with others while discovering devices. Can you please try to disable the epson2 backend in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf ?
