Sorry for not being more responsive on this issue, it is an important one for alot of people... I've been looking at options/alternatives/ dealing with `real life`

Would it be useful if I split this patch to remove the syslog additions?
Yeah, it would... I've moved my systems from libnss-ldap to libnss-ldapd - but still suffering from libpam-ldap and its issues :( Fortunately, I only use it for password changes. I've been looking at what it would take to add the missing pam-ldap functionality to nss-ldapd, and discussing it with others, but I doubt we'll see anything soon... so we definitely need to do something about the crap that is libpam-ldap. I can't recall seeing this issue in the upstream bugzilla - but the specific attribute request patch is a no-brainer -- Rick Nelson "...and scantily clad females, of course.
