Package: aboot Version: 1.0~pre20040408-2 Severity: important My present kernel (2.6.22-3-alpha-smp) is the last Debian kernel I have been able to boot successfully. I spent a lot of time thinking this might be the kernel, but on reflection reading the console output I blame aboot. :-)
For example, trying 2.6.25-1-alpha-smp: ------ [...] aboot: loading uncompressed vmlinuz-2.6.25-1-alpha-smp... aboot: loading compressed vmlinuz-2.6.25-1-alpha-smp... halted CPU 0 halt code = 7 machine check while in PAL mode PC = 14400 Your system has halted due to an irrecoverable error. Record the error halt code and PC and contact your Digital Services representative. In addition, type INFO 3 and INFO 8 at the console and record the results. boot failure P00>>> ------ If I uncompress vmlinuz-2.6.25-1-alpha-smp to vmlinux-2.6.25-1-alpha-smp and try booting that instead, things work better: ------ [...] aboot: loading uncompressed vmlinux-2.6.25-1-alpha-smp... aboot: segment 0, 8203880 bytes at 0xfffffc0001010000 aboot: segment 1, 36 bytes at 0xfffffc0001257e00 aboot: zero-filling 0 bytes at 0xfffffc0001257e24 aboot: loading initrd (9344752 bytes/9125 blocks) at 0xfffffc013f702000 aboot: starting kernel vmlinux-2.6.25-1-alpha-smp with arguments [...] [...] ------ Of course, this kernel halts with the same error about 15 lines and 0 seconds later after probing my CPUs :-p but by then it clearly is the kernel's problem. All "out-of-the-box" compressed Debian kernels following 2.6.22-3-alpha-smp exhibit the same aboot failures (i.e. system dies instead of getting "aboot: zero-filling <blah> bytes ...") but 2.6.25 is the first one I thought of trying an uncompressed image with, so I am not sure exactly how many problems I have or when they crept in. Pointers on investigation directions (or any information I can collect for you) would be welcomed.
