OK, gentoo for the win:

http://gentoo-wiki.com/Frets_On_Fire_-_FoF#Problem:_Can.27t_find_matching_GLX_visual

Apparently fretsonfire absolutely requires a default color depth of 24
in xorg.conf, I (and probably the others for who it did not work) had
16.

The error message could be made clearer so that the user knows what's
up. Seconds, as I have a 24 depth mentioned in my xorg.conf,
fretsonfirt could maybe just use that, even if it's not the default? Or
work with lower color dephts?
