For a long time I was aware that I had a Timidity alsa client service on my system and would have liked to have had it working, but I didn't know how to make it work. Only when I read the response to bug 460588 did I discover that I needed to uncomment the line in /etc/default/timidity. It might be more obvious what was going on if the service were disabled through the standard method of changing the symlink in /etc/rc2.d rather than using an ad hoc method. However, whatever method is used to decide whether the service is enabled, it should be documented in Timidity's README.Debian, along with the fact that the service requires snd-seq-midi to be loaded by putting it in /etc/modules or whatever.
