It works fine for me now. However it misbehaved after upgrade from etch to lenny (today). After upgrade, the above command placed generated fonts under /tmp/texfonts. When I removed all traces of TeX from the system and reinstalled texlive, it swithed to the expected ~/.texmf-var. This is probably an unrelated issue, and I cannot reproduce it any more.
