As Helge mentioned, all this should be done after lenny. LILO templates are....weird but we're living with that for years and we can probably live for one more release with the few quirks you found. lilo deserves a full review, I agree...but, maintainer, *please* postpone this to post-lenny. No change to templates. *At all*
