Strange, that code did not change for months (as of 0.98.2). Since the diversion should already exist (you are upgrading from 0.98.12) you should have got Preparing to replace dictionaries-common 0.98.12 (using .../dictionaries-common_0.98.13_all.deb) ... Leaving `diversion of /usr/share/dict/words to /usr/share/dict/words.pre-dictionaries-common by dictionaries-common' Unpacking replacement dictionaries-common ... unless something weird happened during your previous 0.98.12 installation and your diversions database got corrupted, which is what I tend to think. What is the output of $ grep -n -e words -e dictionaries-common /var/lib/dpkg/diversions Here that outputs 130:/usr/share/dict/words 131:/usr/share/dict/words.pre-dictionaries-common 132:dictionaries-common (numbers are just to check that they are consecutive) Unless dpkg has suddenly changed its behavior, that is the only thing I can suggest. Before uploading I tested a number of 0.98.12/0.98.13 upgrades/downgrades, so I am sure that around upload time this did not happen in my box. Because of that I am tagging this as unreproducible, so if somebody else founds this problem, will feel more inclined to send a 'me too' followup, although I will do the real re-check tomorrow in a sid box, and will change that if appropriate.
