TBH, I consider that part an upstream bug. If it cannot connect to the status bar for whatever reason, it should just open a regular application window.
Well, the problem is most likely in your ion3 status bar implementation.
Since it works fine with KDE, the chance is 50/50 whether it's ion3 or empathy. But anyway...

By the way, this original "hidden window" bug was fixed a while ago:

... this probably got into 2.23.90 or later. As lenny is in freeze and only got 2.23.3, there's probably no chance of it getting fixed?

After trying to go "Available":
** (empathy:11119): DEBUG: empathy_idle_set_presence: Changing presence to Available (2) ** (empathy:11119): DEBUG: empathy_idle_set_presence: NM not connected
NetworkManager is reporting that you are not connected. Are you sure NM
is set up correctly?
I haven't done anything to configure NetworkManager. The system has been installed normally with the Debian installer (using the DHCP autoconfiguration option) and networking works fine for any other program I've used so far.
