I made now a little patch which fixes this. If nobody of the other
grub-devs objects then I commit this in a few days.

Luckly that Dell partition has .AT16 where normal FAT partitions have
FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 and I hope that nobody wants to access this partition
with grub2.
But there seems to be a bug in D-I or somewhere else, for me mkfs.ext2
clears out the first 512 bytes if I format a file/partition with it.
