esound is not capable of reconnecting to the sound device. Whenever the sound configuration changes (e. g. change of the default device in ~/.asoundrc), esd has to be killed and restarted, which is ugly. I wrote a patch which makes esd reconnect to the sound device on SIGUSR1. Frontend programs like gnome-audio-properties and similar tools can then send around a SIGUSR1 to esound servers to have them reconnect to the sound device without interrupting esd client connections.
