Some further investigation showed in my /var/log/kdm.log that there were entries of type

/usr/bin/X: symbol lookup error: /usr/X11R6/lib/libXfont.so.1: undefined symbol: FT_Init_FreeType

I googled this and found this: http://www.debianhelp.org/node/6583

And indeed, my system which was, AFAIK, only maintained using typical Debian update procedures (but, admittedly, temporarily with non-default sources such as the e-tobi and the marillat / multimedia repositories) had plenty of old, crufty stuff under /usr/X11R6/lib, including an old libXfont.so.1.5, just as the post showed.

The only packages I had installed that should have some sort of a footprint under /usr/X11R6 were x11-common, t1-xfree86-nonfree and ttf-xfree86-nonfree. I removed /usr/X11R6 and re-installed those packages. That produced a few links under /usr/X11R6. Re-starting X let me run vncviewer (xtightvncviewer) without any problems.

So this bug can readily be closed and may at best serve as documentation for those running into a similar kind of problem when launching vncviewer. Interestingly, this was the only app where the problem occurred to me.
