On  my  system,  the whole  update-menus  command  run  in less  than  4
seconds.  I  find your results quite  impressive. The only  thing in the
script that can take some time is the call to ImageMagick convert to the
correct size. However, such a call should happen only once for each icon
since  they are kept  in /var/lib/fvwm-crystal/icons/Default.  Could you
check  if  this  directory  contains   the  icons  and  check  the  last
modification dates to see if they are generated again each time?
