For others that are having this issue, I was able to fix it by installing the version of samba from lenny-backports:
In /etc/apt/sources.list: deb http://www.backports.org/debian lenny-backports main contrib non-free # apt-get update # apt-get -t lenny-backports install smbclient [...] The following packages will be upgraded: libwbclient0 samba samba-common smbclient smbfs swat winbind After the upgrade it works fine. # smbclient --version Version 3.3.3 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
