I have the same issue (long test stuck at 90% forever) with one of my
drives as well. I am running smartmontools 5.38+svn2879-4

I've also added my 2 cents in this related redhat bug:
    https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=503344
where a previous poster had the same drive model+fw as me and did not
experience issues.
