Has the problem resolved itself by chance ? about the depedencies of vlc, doing ldd on /usr/bin/vlc is not sufficient because vlc loads its modules at runtime. The modules are in /usr/lib/vlc. In our case the versions of Xlib and related libs would be of interrest.
