today I upgraded to the new open-vm-tools and rebuilt the kernel modules suitable for the new version of tools. After that I restarted the service using the init script and noticed that no process vmtoolsd exists. Aborted Unfortunately it doesn't tell me, what other concurrent process is preventing the daemon from starting. I'm not sure if the problem is new in this release and just came to my attention to late. Even rebooting the server didn't solve the problem.
