I had been using kvm for a long time on my boxes. For my laptop, which doesn't 
have VT, I need to rely on kqemu now.
My earlier usage of kqemu (probably 2yrs ago - when it was not GPL) was with 
success. Using with kqemu gave dramatic performance improvements.

I think option 1 works perfectly well for a Linux Guest. Can't it be enabled 
as an option ?
