I can't produce this at all, running a more or less up to date sid system. Executing exactly the command above (changing the email address, of course) does send email as expected. A quick grep in the sourcecode reveals that the problem might be coming from the configuration parser. Can you post your /etc/mail.rc or ~/.mail.rc files?
