After a lot of fiddling an checking I've got sound partially working. I have to unmute surround playback, set surround jackmode to shared unmute duplicate front, and set channel mode to something other than 2ch. Then I can hear sound from the line in and back surround jacks. :-) I can at least hear sound, but I've found no explanation for this erratic behavior. Perhaps it is time to pass this on to upstream. Please ask if you or upstream needs additional information.
