The epson backend is being phased out in favour of epson2, as I think I
wrote in a previous mail. So this is the correct thing to do; it makes
epson2 the default backend but still allows epson as a fallback in cases
like yours.

Your scanner is listed as a parallel port scanner in our lists right
now; it'd help a lot if you could send a mail to sane-devel about your
scanner so the epson2 maintainer gets a chance to add support for it.
