Hi Gerrit,
I am interested in testing git master for a few reasons:
- some operations are supposed to be a lot faster --- for example,
git grep, which would be nice day to day.
- some of the new features sound interesting:
- branch --set-upstream
- merge -s subtree -Xsubtree=path
- grep --no-index
- rebase -i --autosquash
- rerere forget
- it would allow experimenting with new (out of tree) remote-helpers
such as remote-hg and remote-cvs. Those already seem much nicer
than existing methods for dealing with those version control
systems. It would also be nice to see how hard it is to write a
sane git-svn replacement.
So I packaged 1.7.0-rc0 for myself. The result is at
git://repo.or.cz/debian-git/jrn.git experimental
Outstanding issues:
- There is no official upstream tarball (yet?). I’ve asked upstream
about this; hopefully I will learn more soon. [1]
- The Python git_remote_helpers module is not packaged yet. (The
hard part is dealing with .pyc files.) Generally I would use
python-support for this kind of thing, but its documentation
assumes packaging using debhelper, so this will take some figuring
out.
Perhaps some of this can be useful anyway.
Regards,
Jonathan
