I am aware of this, and have been working on packaging the new version since july last year. Due to several problems (one of which was 'lack of time at the least appropriate moments'), I have not been able to get that ready yet, but it's in Debian's NEW queue (due to the fact that there are new packages), pending approval from the ftpmaster team: http://ftp-master.debian.org/new/beid_3.5.2.dfsg-5.html While normally a formality, the fact that there are several things in the beid source package that don't actually belong in a source package have delayed this acceptance, but I'm hopeful that with this fifth attempt I'll get there. Once this is in, updating to 3.5.3 should be fairly straightforward. > The package in question does not work anymore with the newer batches > of electronic identity cards issued by the Belgian government to all > citizens. When the beid source package is in, belpic should be removed automatically (or, failing that, I'll ask for its removal). Note that this will only apply to the 'unstable' development version of Debian; I cannot upload what is basically a rewrite to the 'stable' branch of Debian, even if the usefulness of this software is indeed degrading. There is a 'backports' archive that can be used for updated packages for the stable branch, but this again requires that this version gets accepted into unstable first. I'd like to retain maintainership, but would absolutely welcome a closer relationship with fedict; up to now, that has been almost nonexistent, which has caused me some issues in the past. > As a support manager I'm in direct contact with the developers > contributing to this software and have knowledge of all known bugs and > issues with the software, as I'm officially second line support for > the eID in Belgium. Good to know that's coming. -- The biometric identification system at the gates of the CIA headquarters works because there's a guard with a large gun making sure no one is trying to fool the system. http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2009/01/biometrics.html
