The 2.6.8 kernel is basically in maintenance mode for Sarge.
And as such enabling of new options isn't really on the cards.
Is it possible for you to try one of the newer upstream kernel
versions that are available in unstable. kernel-image-2.6.11-1-sparc64.
2.6.12 is also on its way, likely as linux-image-2.6.12-1-sparc64.
