But there is no error message popping up? Please check if xmessage is
installed (should be) and that running "xmessage -default okay foobar"
works.

Note that xmonad does not depend on ghc6 (but it should still pop up an
error message).

Next try to compile your .xmonad.hs manually and name the resulting
file /home/marcot/.xmonad/xmonad-i386-kfreebsdgnu and see if that helps.

Probably not related to xmonad.
