I downloaded the precompiled binaries of xpdf-reader from ftp://ftp.foolabs.com/pub/xpdf/xpdf-3.02pl4-linux.tar.gz
The xpdf binary expects the file libpng.so.3. Created a symlink for that file in /lib to /lib/libpng12.so.0.43.0. It works and pressing 'z' works as expected. I think this bug/behaviour change is introduced by the debian patches applied. This is just FYI.
