Yes, I did this in response to the problem Philipp reported, and yes, I forgot about the use-case of moving the whole cache via a symlink. In the next upload approx will (again) support specifying the cache location in the config file, as well as alternate locations for config files. That should allow users to relocate the approx cache without needing a symlink. Are there any other valid uses for symlinks in the approx cache that you can think of?
