Hi Bart,
what Debian distribution/architecture are you using? I'm having the problem,
too, but only on Debian GNU/Hurd:

I will try to re-compile a current version of aptitude on Debian GNU/Hurd
and see it properly builds. The aptitude version for Debian GNU/Hurd
currently in the Debian archives is outdated.
