we never saw that because /etc/default/rcS has VERBOSE=no by default.
... so we just got returned to the command prompt without any feedback.

(I never knew about that VERBOSE switch before; had to pour through 'sh -x'
output to find it ... another thing which is clear in hindsight, but opaque
without prior knowledge)
