I think this bug should be re-opened and and the patch rolled back.

The supposedly "bug" is in fact the intended default behaviour for Firefox. This is the way Firefox behaves on every platform/OS (except Debian, why?).

Most users (including myself) relies on this feature to speed up the process of typing a website address, finding a word in the dictionary, etc.

If one does not want to rely on the "I'm feeling lucky" behaviour, the google bar is right next to the address bar for that.
But with the Debian patch, it becomes redundant.

I don't understand how this single bug report was accepted and changed the way Firefox behaved, without any discussion. By looking at the emails replies to this bug/patch, I can tell that I'm not the only one shocked by this sudden change.
