Your surmise, that the trouble might be that '/etc/mtab' was not a
symlink, is correct. Which the README advises as well. Unfortunately
I hadn't carefully read all of the README until after submitting the
bug. (Earlier I'd only skimmed the README.)
Maybe it would be better if the 'systemd' installation script could
check if '/etc/mtab' is a symlink.

PS: Thanks also for packaging 'systemd', it's an interesting and
ambitious program.
