Hm, now I do have a problem. I can't reproduce it.
I've setup a qemu vm with a i386 userland and a amd64 kernel and systemd boots
just fine. Both with a pae and a amd64 kernel.

So I guess we'll need those debug logs from you to get any further on this 
issue.
