I think you need a newer kernel than 2.6.8 to run an ATI chipset. If you can find one with 2.6.12, you could try that. For amd64 I keep one around at www.tinyplanet.ca/~lsorense/amd64 while for i386 only you would have to look elsewhere for one (I imagine they exist). You could also try your luck on the daily testing/unstable installer builds and see if they do any better. Good luck, with ATI chips and linux you will need it.
