This bug seems to be caused by having multiple instances running of the telepathy-butterfly MSN handler. I have no idea how this can be the case, or how to reproduce it, but the problem can be fixed by killing the currently running instances and manually starting a new one. I leave it to your judgement to decide whether to close this bug report or leave it open.
