I tried using the expeimental xorg to see if it made a difference.
I now get this:
(WW) Falling back to old probe method for fglrx
(II) Loading PCS database from /etc/ati/amdpcsdb
(--) Chipset Supported AMD Graphics Processor (0x6740) found
(II) fglrx: intel VGA device detected, load intel driver.

(II) AMD Video driver is running on a device belonging to a group targeted for
this release
(II) AMD Video driver is signed X: symbol lookup error:
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so: undefined symbol: pciTag
This sounds a bit like

but I cannot see how it can be fixed.

fglrx has to be ported again for the new Xorg release. Since it is RC
there is no chance that it will happen in the next months.
This isn't fglrx's fault, since Xorg is changing the API again and again..
