As far as my searches lead me, this originates in the Oracle team and the awt.Desktop class [1], which under linux only uses gnome mechanisms to handle mime-types and choose appropriate applications [2]. As one can see, the problem is known since at least 2008. I assume that up to now the Desktop class was not included in debian/ubuntu openjdk [3] and that this now has changed. It would be nice if this functionality could be delegated to the openjdk-gnome package. Something similar is connected to the awt.SysTray class [4]. Apparently it was in some way working on KDE3, but before the bug was fixed (someone claimed the bug was due to a nasty workaround for a gnome problem and without the workaround the bug vanished) KDE support was entirely dropped. As an aside, the recent version is gnome-3. Hopefully, instead of adapting to gnome-3, the Desktop class will be reimplemented using freedesktop (libxdg) [5], or of necessary and existing gtk-based mime-handling and desktop-access mechanisms. Also, x-www-browser could be used instead of gnome-www-browser etc. With kind regards, Lutz Lehmann [1] http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/uiswing/misc/desktop.html [2] http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6486393 [3] http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11739333 [4] http://bugs.sun.com/view_bug.do?bug_id=6448876 [5] http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/shared-mime-info-spec -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [email protected] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
