Well it certainly worked with 2.6.26 and 2.6.29 for me today. I wonder what is going on. Which version of debhelper do you have installed? Hmm, why are we passing -v to dh_gencontrol. That's supposed to be -v with a version appended, but $(VERSION) is never set by the looks of it. Why is this working at all...? Oh it seems, modules assistant is setting VERSION, and making things work somehow. Interesting.
