Yes but that app is not free software?

It is. But that's not the only criteria for a package to be in Debian. My problem is that the package has several unresolved bugs, to of them are considered serious and neither the maintainer nor upstream seem to care anymore.

Also, why would you want to use desktop software on a phone? That's
rather an exceptional use case and quite uncomfortable. Pidgin and the
plugin are meant to be used on a desktop.

Because afaik we don't have anything better?

You do. If you are serious about using Facebook on your phone, you will use the Facebook app on your iPhone, Android or any other major smartphone brand.

I don't really think there are many people on this planet who would fall into the category of being a heavy Facebook user on Debian on their smartphone. Those are rather disjunctive use cases and the very few people who actually use it wouldn't justify having such a broken package in Debian.

Sorry, but that doesn't justify having packages in such bad shape in
Debian. We seriously need to kick out packages like these as they slow
down the development cycles for newer releases.

You are right. I just don't want people to think that XMPP somehow
replaces pidgin-facebookchat fully.

It may not fully replace it, but I am pretty sure it's enough for >95% of the use cases and is actually still well maintained and has less bugs.

CCing the maintainer directly to ask him for his opinion. I already filed a request of removal, talked to the ftp-masters and checked the reverse dependencies, there aren't any:

glaubitz@ries:~$ dak rm -Rn pidgin-facebookchat
Working... done.
Will remove the following packages from unstable:

pidgin-facebookchat | 1.69-2.1 | source, amd64, armel, armhf, i386, ia64, kfreebsd-amd64, kfreebsd-i386, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390, s390x, sparc
pidgin-facebookchat | 1.69-2.1+b1 | hurd-i386

Maintainer: Jonathan Davies <j...@ubuntu.com>
