Dude, as I wrote to you a couple of seconds after receiving your
mail, the two binaries *are* setgid mail and it *still* *fails*.

Anyway, I did find the reason, so sorry for the clutter:

  d---------  2 root mail 20 2006-06-27 23:51 /var/mail/

and this is on purpose.
