Either defoma is borken, or dh_installdefoma doesn't generate the
appropriate snippet for what you describe. ttf-dejavu.postinst has:

if [ "$1" = configure ]; then
test -x /usr/bin/defoma-font && /usr/bin/defoma-font reregister-all
$FILE
fi

Yet I had to dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig.
